William Funnell is a distinguished British showjumper known for his remarkable achievements in the sport. He secured a team gold medal at the 2013 European Championships in Herning, Denmark and has represented Great Britain in numerous Nations Cup teams. He is celebrated for his record breaking fifth win at the Hickstead Derby, winning in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2018 and 2024, making him the only rider to have achieved this feat which was awarded the ‘Moment of the Year’ by the British Equestrian Media Association. His contributions to the sport have earned him a place in the British Horse Society Hall of Fame, highlighting his enduring impact on showjumping.

William is married to eventer Pippa Funnell, and together they run the Billy Stud in Surrey, where they breed and train future equestrian stars. The Billy Stud is well established and has a strong ethos on bringing horses up in the most natural environment possible. The horses are kept in small herds and at pasture for most of the year (weather permitting). The emphasis is on ensuring that the Billy Stud horses start life with a “Better Beginning”, aligning well with our mission at the British Horse Foundation.

William is actively involved in other charitable work, particularly through his role as a Vice President of the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund. Additionally, William has served on the committee of the London International Horse Show, helping to organise events that raise funds for various equestrian-related causes.
